Penguin Media Hire have been involved in the Kemptown Carnival in Brighton for the last few years – a one day diverse street party attracting upwards of 20,000 people over the course of the event.
Tasked with providing temporary power to all of the stages, attractions, stalls and food vendors, this is no mean feat – with a very narrow window of time before the event starts, all the cabling and distribution needs to be deployed the morning of the event, as soon as the roads are closed by the Council. Not to mention the stages and food vendors needing the power as soon as possible for sound check and to start their cooking! A task made more tricky by the inability to use vehicles on site once stages are up and stalls are placed.
Once the Carnival is under way, technicians are available to ensure everything runs smoothly for artist changeovers, or any queries that may arise.
We are incredibly proud to say that even with the complex distribution at hand, and the diverse needs presented to us, not once have we had a power outage – even when the weather took a brief turn in 2014 – testament to the advance planning of the system.
Then of course, once the Carnival is over, there is a short window available before the roads must be opened – so a swift, but above all safe de-rig must be completed. In the presence of a few members of the public who have had a little too much excitement for one day, there is always something to make you smile
We also provided sound reinforcement to the Go Bang! / Radio Reverb stage, and look forward to greater involvement in the coming years of a fantastic family event.
